Manassas Park avenges last week’s loss to Freedom (South Riding)
By Jay Jackson
(MANASSAS PARK, Va.) - What a difference a week
makes. After traveling to Freedom exactly one week ago and getting run
out of South Riding, Manassas Park, bolstered by the presence of senior
LaQuan Gaines-Ward, who did not play in last week's meeting, defeats
Freedom (South Riding) 69-61.
The Cougars started fast and led
21-9 after the 1st quarter. A rare 4 point play, three-pointer and foul
shot, by Manassas Park guard Nasser Smith made it 34-20 with 2:37 left
in the half. Freedom (South Riding) would battle back and a vicious
two-handed follow up dunk at the buzzer by senior Andrew Ajilore closed
the gap to 37-29 at the half.
Manassas Park opened things up in
the 3rd quarter and led 49-38 going into the 4th. Down 50-40, with 5:30
to go, The Eagles (1-2), fueled by Step Your Game Up's Darren Hawkins
and Ajilore, went on a 15-7 run and after consecutive baskets by
Hawkins, Manassas Park's lead was down to 2 with 3:01 remaining.
Cougars were determined not to let it slip away. Smith buried two huge
three-point shots and Gaines-Ward scored on a driving lay up to extend
Manassas Park's lead. Smith and Gaines-Ward closed the game out on the
foul line as Manassas Park would go on to win 69-61.
(South Riding) was led by Hawkins who had a game-high 23 points and 4
steals, while Ajilore added 22 points and 13 rebounds. Manassas Park's
Smith had a team-high 21 and Gaines-Ward provided 15.
